Today was a full eventful day! I
am in sunny beautiful South Africa! Yesterday I played my concert at the
church and had a lovely time working with the band and the choir! We did
my arrangement of "Let there Be Peace on Earth” from my CD "Grace.” Very
fun! Today I attended Church and played at the service a bit. I’ve never
experienced a type of church h service like this. They mainly sing and
have the whole band playing behind the minister for most of the service.
They sing lots of contemporary spiritual/ Christian rock songs and the whole
room is dancing and singing along. It’s a very moving experience.
After service today we went to Sheila’s house (the women who doing all of the
fundraising work for Rebecca’s Well http://www.rebeccaswell.org/) and I got to
hang with lots of the musicians and local people here. We had lots of
fun. And the funniest thing about today is I got locked in the
bathroom. Ha-ha. I must have been in their bathroom for like 20 min
trying to figure out the key until finally I Knocked loud and was rescued by
the man of the house as he nearly slammed the door down. Then everyone
started clapping as I walked out. I felt like I was on a reality TV
show. Ha-ha. It was so embarrassing and hilarious and my dad was
taping (of course.)
One last exciting thing about today, friend of mine
emailed Hugh Masekela to tell him that I was in town and that he should see my
gig. He was going to come yesterday but got tied up. However, he wanted
to talk to me and we talked on the phone today and connected. He sounded
so nice and we’re going to connect when he comes to Boston. It’s amazing
that he’s in Johannesburg because he said he’s been on tour for the last 6
months now. Can you imagine?! The legend is in his 70s and still
touring like crazy! Wow!
More later!
