Flying high from the gig tonight!! We played at the Kennedy Center, the Terrace Theater. It’s a beautiful venue. It feels so good to be back. I was here two years ago (on my 16th birthday) performing with my band and Terri Lyne. This time I’m playing with the "all star” cast of Terri Lyne Carrington-Drums, Geri Allen- Piano, Esperanza Spalding- Bass, Dee Dee Bridgewater and myself on vocals.
After much rehearsal all day and last night we had an amazing set. The first set we were paying tribute to Mary Lou Williams. We had all new arrangements and compositions of hers to learn. The second set we played some originals and then Dee Dee came on and brought the house down!! She kept us all on our toes going round to each person and battling it out. We played the fastest version of Duke Ellington’s, "Cottontail” that was absolutely thrilling. Her and Terri Lyne were at it!! It started with just drums and voice and it was unbelievable. That group is so great, it was such an honor to play with all of them and it was filled with great vibes!
