The New Grace Kelly, A Young Jazz Star
|
| Grace had invited me to play a few tunes on her new CD but once we got into the studio there were many inspired moments and it turned out to be a whole Cd on its own. I gave her permission to play better than I, if she just couldn’t stand it anymore. With this great rhythm section it was a pleasure to be a part of the musical process and experience. Grace is a fearless young improviser, and besides that she is fun to be around. Now I have a friend in Grace who at this very young age is ‘seriously’ interested in playing the saxophone and more. I thank Irene and Bob (her folks) for being so encouraging and supportive of this project and of Grace. Lee Konitz |

| Hi Grace, "Well after reading the glowing reviews from many of my peers on your CD jacket I expected something special, but words can only do so much justice toward introducing your talents and obvious dedication to music. It simply has to be heard... you know how get to the essence of swing, sound, and true improvisation, and whether you are playing or singing or composing this essence shines through and is the sign of a true artist at work. It also goes without saying, that you have a maturity far beyond your years. I look forward to following your career. I really think you will have a big impact on the music world."
best, Randy Brecker

AMAZING ! ! ! ! !, January 11, 2008
This is a simply AMAZING CD. Great alto sax, and great voice. Grace Kelly's version of "Round Midnight" is mesmerizing. "Philosophical Flying Fish" is SO cool. "Over the Rainbow" is one of the best versions I've heard since the version Phil Woods did on alto in, I think, the 90's. When it comes to "SAMBA DE VERAO", all I can say is, "Girl from Ipanema" move OVER, there's a new kid on the block. What a find. GREAT ! ! ! ! !

Review of "Times Too" by Ken Dryden for Allmusic.com

Grace Kelly (no relation to the late actress) shows a surprising maturity for a musician who is only in her early teens. Times Too is actually her second recording as a leader, an ambitious two-CD set that showcases her abilities as an alto saxophonist, composer, arranger, and vocalist. On the first disc, she sticks primarily to familiar jazz compositions and standards, backed by pianist Doug Johnson, bassist John Lockwood, and drummer Yoron Israel. Counting Lee Konitz and Jerry Bergonzi among her instructors, Kelly is obviously a bit young to have developed a distinctive sound, but she shows a good bit of imagination in her flights of improvisation, while she obviously believes in regular practice before entering the studio, often the downfall of many a young jazz wunderkind. She utilizes space perfectly in a slightly breezy take of "Isfahan," negotiates the brisk changes of "All the Things You Are" without a miscue, and captures the drama within "'Round Midnight," though the normally emotional "Blood Count" (composed by Billy Strayhorn as he suffered in the final stages of esophageal cancer) would have benefited from a more poignant interpretation — something that would be hard for someone so young to express. Disc two focuses more on Kelly's vocals and original compositions. Her "Key to the Missing Door" is a pop ballad, with the young singer showing a bit of nervousness before gaining steam. She's plenty confident in a bluesy take of the Beatles' "Oh, Darling." Kelly's "Time to Be Free," her best effort as a writer, is heard in two versions, one with overdubbed harmony vocals and the other with Kelly switching back to alto sax. She trades licks with fellow alto saxophonist Jeremy Udden (who is also one of her teachers) in a spirited, funky treatment of Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours." Few young jazz musicians are ready to tackle as ambitious a program as 13-year-old Grace Kelly did for this CD. Hopefully, it will serve as a stepping stone for her to achieve greater recognition and a satisfying career.

When I met Grace Kelly after my show at The Regatta Bar two years ago, I had no idea that this ten year old girl would go on to record her first CD with world class musicians only two years later. At a time when music is almost evaporating from schools and where children are rarely exposed to our country’s legacy of timeless jazz and standards, such a phenomenon as this singer-songwriter-saxophonist is indeed something to celebrate. Hearing the six standards and jazz pieces tastefully mixed with six of Grace’s original songs, is to discover the boundless spirit and imagination of a natural artist. There is a compelling sense of ease and joy in her energy and this girl knows how to swing as evidenced by tunes such as Nat King Cole’s “Straighten Up and Fly Right”. Her voice is sweet and soulful, bridging the vocal traditions of jazz and pop music in an authentic, original way. Her sensitivity, control and focus as an alto saxophonist is impressive. When I played some songs of hers for the legendary drummer, Victor Lewis, he said “Wow, I love her sound.” She has a warm, burnished tone that is equally pleasurable on lyrical songs like Hoagy Carmichael’s classic “Stardust” and the urbane bop tune “One By One by Wayne Shorter. What knocked me out in particular is her songwriting. The 5/4 piece “G-Bop” sounds like a jazz classic. The instrumental “Tinkerbell” is a velvety smooth jazz song that sets an appealing, dusky mood. The title song “Dreaming” as well as “Baby, Baby” (introduced as an instrumental and reprised as a vocal) has smooth jazz overtones as well, which swoon into pop realms and evoke Grace’s burgeoning romantic yearnings. Her song “On My Way Home”, with lyrics written with her father Robert, is folk/pop story song hauntingly arranged with David Eure’s poignant violin and Grace’s pure voice echoing the images. Backed by her mentor Ken Berman, splitting tracks on piano with Doug Johnson, John Lockwood on bass, and Guy Goodwin and Jordan Perlson splitting tracks on drums, Grace is beautifully supported throughout the entire CD. She plays and sings with assurance, connecting to all the delicious music of her fellow artists. There is no telling how far this child prodigy will go with the limitless possibilities of her voluminous talents. Grace is following her heart and that path is sure to lead her on a great adventure that all listeners, lucky enough to discover her, will relish. Hello Everyone! I've recently released a recording my first CD entitled "DREAMING". www.cdbaby.com/cd/gracekelly It has been a very exciting and fun experience. I all started with Ken Berman, my former elementary School music teacher. Ken went to New York a year and a half ago to follow his dream as a professional songwriter musician, and left all his elementary students behind L :cough cough:. “I’m just kidding Mr. Berman don’t feel bad!” Check out his new CD and Ken at www.KenBermanMusic.com. When he was visiting this past June I played him one of my songs and he said, “ Grace, you have to record this.” That was the inspiration to get into this project. Ken pointed my dad in the right direction and my dad took it from there. First we needed to find a recording studio and engineer. From all accounts the best in the area was PBS Studios of Westwood, MA. Run by Peter Kontrimas, a really nice man, great engineer and a renown bass player. Of course Ken Berman would play piano. Ken told my dad the best bass player around was the world famous John Lockwood. So my dad called and asked him if he would record with me. I was incredibly happy and amazed that he had said yes! He has been so nice to me and treats me as a true musician, not just a kid. I want to play with him any chance I get. Bill Winiker of The Winiker Orchestra recommended a drummer, Guy Goodwyn and the group was complete. So the first recording session took place and we got all of my six tunes recorded. I couldn’t believe the music we made. It was so amazing to have my own tunes actually come alive with these great musicians. The sound, Peter’s studio, everything was so incredible. So anyways. . . We wanted to do more recording but I had to go to summer camp, Camp Encore Coda in Maine, in a few days. We scheduled to do some covers after the summer was over. After the summer I started my jazz piano lessons again with Doug Johnson, an amazing amazing jazz pianist who has played many places around the world. He started working with me on some of the tunes I was going to record. He was playing the piano while I sung and played sax. Since we had practiced a lot of tunes together I thought it would be good if Doug played on the second session recording. Doug had an idea of a drummer he works well with and recommended Jordan Perlson. I was so lucky to get to play with Jordan Perlson because he’s an incredible player. And of course John Lockwood on bass. The night before the second recording session my mother, father and I went to Scullers Jazz Club to see Ann Hampton Callaway www.annhamptoncallaway.com She had a very fun entertaining show with awesome music. After the show we got a signed CD and I took my picture with her. The best part was that she gave me her special Diva blessing, (the Diva Blessing is sort of hard to explain with words) so I would sing well the next day. I hope when you hear the CD you will think it worked. The second set of the recording was really fun. I loved being in the studio and recording with these incredible musicians, who were all so friendly and personal, and maaaaaaarvolous on their instruments. My CD will include six of my own original compositions and six other songs to show my love of many different styles of music.
